The Juan de Fuca Cable Project route
will connect converter stations near existing substations
in View Royal, BC and Port Angeles, Washington State.
The Juan de Fuca Cable Project includes the following (approximate) distances:
- Total Length (Greater Victoria to Port Angeles): just under 50km (30 miles)
- B.C. Terrestrial Component: 12 km (7 miles)
- U.S. Terrestrial Component: 2 km (1mile)
- Submarine Section: 35 km (22 miles)
Terrestrial and underwater cable routes are subject
to Federal, Municipal and State regulations.
Route Selection was based on:
- Environmental studies
- Technical feasibility
- Consultation
- Low environmental impact
- Existing utilities
Using areas that are already designated as utility
rights-of-way reduces disturbance to the environment.
Because the cable will be buried, there will be no
visual impact and continued transportation, recreation
and agricultural usage of the overlying real estate
will be unchanged.
Project planning and studies take into account the
following:
- The environment (marine and terrestrial)
- Consultation with interested parties
- Transportation
- Aesthetics
- Recreational uses
- Commercial uses
